EQUINE EXAMS & DIAGNOTICS

Performing a thorough oral examination for your horse is important to identify health concerns that could be causing pain or pose risk for more serious issues if left unaddressed.  Horses are typically  stoic creatures and signs of oral pain can be difficult to detect until disease has progressed to advanced stages. By scheduling your horse’s annual oral exam, you can feel a peace of mind that there are no dental issues lurking inside the entrance to one of the most important, systems in the body — The Gut!

A general health check is performed to assess saftety of sedation, then a sedative is given to allow examination of your horse’s mouth without causing undue distress.  If a dental ‘float’ is found to be necessary, it will be done while your horse is still relaxed.

This service is conveniently provided on-site at the barn or location where your horse is situated. This ensures minimal disruption to your horse’s daily routine and reduces the stress associated with transportation. Our procedures are performed with the utmost care and attention to your horse’s health and comfort.

EQUINE ORAL SURGERY

For advanced surgical procedures, we collaborate closely with the horse owner and their general veterinarian to select the most suitable surgical facility. This ensures that the necessary anesthesia and perioperative care are available to support your horse through their surgical treatment. Currently, we perform the majority of horse surgeries with High Country Veterinary Services in Steamboat Springs.

EQUINE DENTAL FLOATING

Floating the teeth entails application of filing instruments to smooth any sharp edges on the teeth which are traumatizing the cheeks or tongue that are rubbing against them.  Because a horse’s teeth continue to erupt throughout their life, they can develop ‘malocclusions’ where one or more teeth becomes overlong.  An overlong tooth can create subsequent issues with other teeth around it.  Floating teeth also entails reducing overlong teeth. Prevention is essential! We recommend that your horse have an annual exam with or without a float at Companion Dentistry and Oral Surgery. These services can be provided either in a hospital or on your farm. To schedule an appointment, call (970) 331-0453.
